ROWAn CLASS

Miss Plant, Mrs Broughton, Mrs Timms and Mrs Woolley

Welcome to Year 3 Rowan! This page will give you an insight into the exciting learning that happens in our class.

Super Science Week!

All week it has been British Science week! We began thinking from our Global Citizen book 'Harness in the wind'.

We then created questions, made windmills, planned a fair test, carried out a fair test and then collected, concluded and evaluated our findings. We were also lucky to take part in a STEM workshop with Ozobots.

Take a look at our exciting week of Science!

Hooray for the Halle!

The Year 3 classes were lucky enough to visit the Halle Orchestra at the City Hall. The children watched, listened and sang with the Halle Orchestra. The children did Mosborough Primary school proud by singing 'Believe' in the spectacular arena.

Take a glimpse at our awesome day!

World Book Day!

On Thursday 5th March, it was time to celebrate World Book Day!

Rowan class dressed up in pyjamas, had a booky break time and explored non fiction information and presented this back to their class.

Take a look at our wonderful day!

Chatting with a volcano expert

This week, we prepared a range of questions to ask Emma, a volcano expert. She Skyped us and answered all of our questions about volcanoes! It was amazing to hear from her knowledge and experiences. She told us about the Ring of Fire, the biggest volcano and the most perilous experience she has encountered!

Take a look at our video call with Emma!

Spring Overview

Below is an overview of what is to be taught and explored in Y3 throughout the next Spring term.

Geography genius!

Over the last few weeks, we have been investigating the human and physical features of Sheffield, Manchester and Plymouth. The children have practised their map skills on printed maps and on the computers to find and locate different features.

They were also lucky enough to ask questions to Miss Farmer who has moved here from Plymouth! The children learned some interesting answers about the city by the coast.

Y3 Rowan: Geography genius!

Mad about Magnets!

In our Science, we have been exploring magnets. We have learned that they are made up of a North and a South pole and each pole has their own magnetic field. The children then explored what magnets do to each other (attract and repel) and to other objects/materials around the classroom. We discussed the materials which are magnetic and the ones which are not.
Take a look at the children investigating!

Multiplication Madness!

In Year 3, we have been using the grid method to multiply with 2 digit numbers. We have been drawing the Base 10 equipment to help us visualise each number and how it is made up of tens and ones.

Look at the workings we have used to solve tricky multiplication calculations!

Homework Project

Over the Christmas holiday, Y3 were asked to create an Earth to demonstrate its layers. This will support their understanding of the Earth before we investigate processes that occur upon it e.g. volcanoes and earthquakes.

Take a look at how creative the children were!

Knowledge Organiser - Explore

Below is the Knowledge Organiser for the Geography part of our learning.

Our new focus question is "How might we live in the future?".

How did people from the past shape the world we know today?

Throughout the autumn term, Year 3 have been finding out the answer to the question above. To help us answer this question, we have explored the life of the Stone Age, Ancient Greeks and Romans.

The children created exhibitions to showcase all of their learning and understanding and we presented this at Clifton Park Museum.

Take a look below to see our 'Night at the Museum' and answers to our question!

"The Stone Age shaped our world because they created tools to cut things and we use these today"

"The Ancient Greeks invented the Olympic Games and we still use this sports competition today".

"The Romans created roads to make it easier to travel on".

"The Stone Age learned how to use fire and this stops us from getting food poisoning and helps our brain grow!"

"The Ancient Greeks created democracy and this helps us vote fairly".

"The Romans made the calendar which helps us know what day it is".

The Firework Maker's Daughter

This term we have been reading 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' as part of our Book Study.

The children have had numerous opportunities to explore their background knowledge, read aloud and think aloud, explore vocabulary, visualise scenes, retell the gist and investigate using their inference skills.

Below are some photos of us taking part in some drama activities to better understand the story sequence and character emotions.

The Farmers' Market!

During Enterprise week, the class used many design and technology skills. First they evaluated existing dream catchers. Then they practised the running, catch and whip stitch. After this, they designed their own and made it. Finally they evaluated their efforts.

The class should be so proud of their products and we raised £87.00 in Rowan class alone for some wonderful charities. Well done!

Take a look below at some of our final products.

Bones, bones, bones!

In Science, we have been exploring bones. We have looked at a variety of skeletons and began naming our bones with scientific names.

Below you can see us making our own interpretation of a human skeleton using dog bones!

Visitor from Clifton Park museum

On Friday 13th September, Vicky from Clifton Park museum came into school to speak with the year 3 classes. She set an important job for them. She wants them to update the Stone Age, Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman exhibitions within the museum. The children said they would love to help out! Vicky said that as a reward she would arrange a 'Night at the museum' sleepover! The children were overjoyed (as you can see below).

Y3 Expectation meeting for Parents

Below is the information shared with parents about the Y3 expectations. Please ask any questions if you are unsure.

Knowledge Organiser

Below is the knowledge organiser to support the learning of our first history focus: The Stone Age. Your child should have their own paper copy. It can be used to help familiarise with vocabulary, chronology and events from the time period.

Autumn 1 Learning Overview

Below is the learning overview for our first half term.

Rewards

In Rowan class, there will be a variety of rewards given as the children learn and achieve.

Class Dojo- This will be used frequently to give individual rewards for showing creativity, care, good communicating, collaboration, critical thinking, independence, respect and our termly value. When the children reach a milestone, they will earn a treat (as shown below).

House point- When a child has shown outstanding learning, they will receive a house point token for their team. The winning house will take part in a reward morning at the end of the year.

Table points- These points can be earned when the table has worked together and shown good learning and respect of their table resources. Every Friday, the winning table will receive a treat!

Class Jar- To earn a end of term reward, the whole class will work towards a target and earn pom poms in the jar. Once the jar is full, the target is achieved and a celebration can be decided as a class e.g. extra iPad time, extra break slot, movie afternoon.

Rainbow readers- Children can collect a rainbow of stickers for reading at home! The reading records will be checked every Friday and if the children have read with an adult 3 times during the last week they can collect a sticker. Once they have earned 7 stickers, they will receive a house point.

Class charter

Below is our class charter which we wrote together on transition day and individually signed and agreed to. Our year will be wonderful if we always remember to follow these important statements.
