Olive Class

Miss Sanderson and Mrs Reeder

Welcome to Year 6 Olive! This page will give you an insight into the exciting learning that happens in our class.

Dragon Artwork

Take a look at our dragon eye artwork. We have developed our skills using pencil and water colour to create an amazing final piece!

Exploring Light

This week in Science, we have been exploring how light travels.

We used different materials and created holes in them to see if the light from a torch would travel through.

We then used scientific vocabulary to explain what we found out and our experiment helped us to generate further questions to research.

Understanding Global Warming

In our Geography lessons, we have been exploring the challenges of climate change and global warming. To do this, we have looked at news articles, graphs and images and used the resources to help us to draw conclusions and raise questions which we want to discuss further.

What is a city of tolerance and respect

In RE, we have been exploring what a city of tolerance and respect look like. We have linked our ideas to key issues such as homelessness, natural disasters, sports events and public transport.

Crucial Crew

We have had a super day at Crucial Crew today preparing for our next adventure into secondary school. The children learned key first aid skills, road safety skills and fire safety skills. They also explored the current issues of knife crime, arson and child exploitation and took part in their very own mock court case.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Y6 Olive!

Christmas Stockings

Here are some fantastic examples of our final sewing projects.

Well done Olive!

How can we tell truth from tale

This week, we have used all of our history learning about the Maya to reflect on our overall question. First, we used post it notes to organise our thinking. Then, we wrote down our final thoughts. Here are some excellent examples of our learning.

Sew far sew good!

Here are a few photos from our sewing skills session this week. Olive were super at persevering and we had some excellent experts in the class who helped across the afternoon, particularly with threading needles! Look out for some future images of our final Christmas stockings. I am sure they are going to be fantastic!

Midnight feasting!

In our most recent piece of writing, we are focusing on building suspense by describing a midnight mission to the fridge.

Here are some photographs of the drama that we carried out as a class to help us to be clear about what our reader will picture.

Maya Workshop

Here are some photos from our fantastic Maya workshop with Dr Davies last week. She was truly an expert in her field and we are really grateful that she was able to share some of her excellent knowledge with us. I am sure that she has inspired a few future archaeologists in Olive class!

Migration Workshop

Today in Year 6 we had a visitor from the Red Cross charity who ran a workshop with our class. We learned about key vocabulary linked to the issue of migration. Following this, we explored different push and pull factors as to why people might choose to migrate to another country. We discussed poverty and what this can look like in the world. Finally, we watched a video of a young boy called Ali who had migrated to a new country and thought about some of the challenges that he faced and how he overcame these.

Overall, the session was really thought-provoking and allowed us to share lots of great ideas! We will continue to explore this theme in our P4C lessons this half term.

Farmers' Market 2019

The children in Olive class have worked so hard this week to design, make and evaluate a wooden bird feeder. Skills we have needed have included sawing, sanding and painting. I am so impressed with the teamwork and commitment they have shown and we are all really proud of the produce that we now have to sell at our annual autumn market.

I hope you all have a relaxing half term! :-)

Basketball

We have been really enjoying our sessions with the Sheffield Hatters this half term so far. Here are some videos of us displaying some key skills!
