Cherry Class

Mrs Johnson, Miss Nicholson and Miss Palfreyman

Welcome to Foundation 2 Cherry!

Coming soon, an insight into the exciting learning that happens in our class.

What makes a home?

In Spring we will try to answer the question 'What makes a home?'  We will keep you up to date with all of our learning as we answer our question.

We loved celebrating World Book Day.  We had a great time relaxing and sharing books in our 'Booky Breaktime' reading area!

As geographers we have been exploring our school environment.  We explored both inside and outside school, recording all the main features and landmarks.

We investigated our school garden to see how it has changed as Spring approaches.  We wondered 'who might make their home here?'

Please see our topic overview for Spring 2.

In Cherry Class we love to write.

We are continuing to answer our question 'What makes a home?'  We have been thinking about what materials would make a good roof for a house and we have carried out our own investigations. . .

We have continued to learn about Chinese New Year.  We painted our own dragon head and decorated the body using hatching (drawing) skills. We also made our own spring rolls.  We practised our cutting skills and when they were complete we enjoyed tasting them.

We really enjoy developing our communication skills through 'Rainbow Talk'.  Here we are describing, predicting and talking about the items in the box.

This week we have been finding out about homes around the world.  We have used lots of different materials to have a go at making our own homes.

We have been investigating materials to find out which would make the best roof for a house.  We know that it needs to be waterproof.  We also investigated to find out which material would be strong enough to make a bridge for the Gingerbread Man to cross a river when he was escaping from his home.

We have been learning all about Chinese New Year and what happens in the homes of those people celebrating it.  We have been using our developing painting skills to make a whole class dragon and fireworks which are regularly used as part of the celebration for the start of the New Year.

We are very proud of Arlo, who has been working hard to develop his reading skills.  He can now read lots of words on sight.  Well done Arlo!

In the holidays we have all been busy making a model of our own homes.  Take a look at our houses.

On Monday we had a visit from a little rat who was looking for a home.

What do we treasure?

We have had a fabulous end to the year.  We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas party.  Santa brought us a present and we were all very lucky to get a new book.  We treasure stories in Cherry Class so our presents were gratefully received.

To help us reflect upon our learning this term we invited our parents into school so that they could talk with us about  what we have learned.  We hope that you enjoyed it.

People celebrating Diwali and Christmas often send cards to the people that they treasure.  We are making our own celebration cards.  Here is a sneak preview.  Can you guess what we are doing?

Here are a few of our finished cards, we are very proud of our hatching skills.

In maths, we are learning how to count carefully.  Santa treasures the elves who work for him and he wanted to have a party to say thank you to them.  We had to help him count out the things he had in his sack so that he knew what else he needed to buy.

As we have learned about different celebrations we have learned that people who celebrate Diwali and Christmas often give presents.  We brought in some of our favourite toys and talked about why we treasure them.

We have been learning about the Christian festival, Christmas.  We have found out that Christians treasure Jesus as they believe that he is the son of God.  We also found out that they treasure the nativity story and many people remember and celebrate this story every year.  As Jesus is known by Christians as 'The Light of the World' we asked our parents to help us to make a Christingle as this is a Christian tradition.

We have been learning about the Hindu festival of light, 'Diwali'.  We have found out the Hindu's around the world treasure Rama and Sita.  They celebrate their story every year.  We made Diva lamps and lanterns to help us understand the celebration.

Autumn 2

During our second half term in school, we will continue to concentrate our learning around the question 'What do we treasure?'  but our learning will shift to focus more on 'Celebrations'.

Please see below our topic overview, which will give you an insight in to what your child will be learning this half-term.

The  'Knowledge Organiser' shows some of the specific vocabulary that we will use with your child throughout the topic.  These are available for the children to use in our class and have been sent home for your reference.

Autumn 1

Farmers' Market!

We had a very busy end to our first half term! We evaluated, designed and made our very own Pirate themed biscuits to sell as part of our 'Enterprise Week'. It was a great success and we made £120 to donate to charity. Thank you for your support.

We had an exciting visitor to our classrooms... Pirate Dread! He told us all about the life of a pirate!

We also went on a treasure hunt and discovered lots of clues hidden around our school! We discovered that they were the lost items of the Granny from our story, 'My Granny is a Pirate'!

We learnt about the correct terms for the different parts of a pirate ship using our very own pirate ship outside!

We have been learning about 2D shapes.  We have made our own shapes using wool and we have been on a shape hunt, looking for 2D shapes in the environment.

We have been focussing our learning about the people and things that we treasure.  Here are some of our treasure boxes that we made at home.  We have shown our classmates the things that we brought from home and talked about the different things that we treasure.

European Languages Day

To celebrate European Languages Day we learned all about the culture, language and food from Italy.

During our first half term in school, we will concentrate our learning based around the question 'What do we treasure?'  Much of our learning will be inspired by a pirate theme.  Please see below our topic overview, which will give you an insight in to what your child will be learning this half-term.  There is also a 'Knowledge Organiser' so that you are aware of specific vocabulary that we will use with your child throughout the topic.  These are available for the children to use in our class and we recommend that you spend some time looking at it with your child at home.

Cherry Class Charter

This week in class we have spent some time talking about the rules of the class, in order to create a happy and productive learning environment.  We have sorted different types of 'behaviour' in to 'good choices' and 'bad choices'.  We all agreed that we will try our very best to make good choices while we are in Cherry Class.
