Banyan Class 2019
Miss Mason, Mrs Broughton, Miss Goodwin, Mrs Timms and Mrs Woolley
Welcome to Year 3 Banyan! This page will give you an insight into the exciting learning that happens in our class.
Our PE days are Monday (swimming) and Wednesday (indoor).. please ensure you have your PE kit on these days!
Science Week
The theme of British Science Week this year was 'Our Diverse Planet'. In Year 3, we read a book called 'The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind'. This is based on a true story about a boy in Malawi who built a wind turbine to create electricity. We used this book to spark our scientific thinking and created lots of questions about wind power. Our STEM challenge was to create a fan that would spin in the wind - this was trickier that we thought it would be! Once we had our fans, we worked collaboratively to plan and carry out our own investigations! As well as this, we were also lucky enough to attend a workshop where we had to program some robots to travel around the globe and help to save countries in crisis. We have had so much fun and have demonstrated some fantastic scientific skills... have a look at some of our highlights below.
Halle Orchestra Trip
Y3 had a fantastic day getting the tram into town and watching the Halle Orchestra perform at the City Hall. We even had time for lunch in the Peace Gardens! Thank you to the lovely parent volunteers who joined us and helped to make it such an enjoyable day.
Skype with a Volcano expert!
We were lucky enough to be able to Skype Emma who is a Volcanologist working at University College London. She was very impressed with the questions that we had prepared for her and we learnt lots about the volcanoes she has monitored recently.
World Book Day 2020
On World Book Day, we explored our favourite non-fiction texts. As a table we explored a different page which gave us lots of information about volcanoes and earthquakes. Then, we had to become to experts to teach the rest of the class what we had learnt!
Have a look at what we will be learning this half term...
Design and Technology
In DT, we have been practising our woodwork skills! We can use junior hacksaws, bench hooks and G clamps independently. We practised using triangle joints to help us create strong joins. Now we have mastered the skills, we are going to design and create our own 'earthquake proof' structures.
We are Rights Respecting!
watch our video to hear the poems that we have written explaining our rights.
Explore term - Knowledge Organiser
Here is our knowledge organiser for our 'Explore' term. Our question is 'How might we live in the future?' We will use the knowledge organiser to help us learn some key facts linked to our geography learning. Why don't you try and learn them at home too? You could have a family quiz to see how much you can remember!

Y3 Night at the Museum Sleepover!
We had an amazing time sleeping over at Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham. We explored the museum, took part in exciting quizzes and activities and shared all of our history learning with the staff at the museum. We also ate chocolate spread sandwiches for supper, watched a movie and stayed up very late! All of the adults were really proud of the children and their superb behaviour and attitudes. Thank you Clifton Park for an unforgettable night. Here are some photos...
Science Homework
In Science, we have been exploring rocks! We have learnt about the three types of natural rock, their properties and how they are formed. Have a look at some of the learning we have done at home too!
Night at the Museum Sleepover!
Our sleepover at Clifton Park Museum is on Friday 13th December! Here is all the information that you need...
Children in Need (+P4C!)
As well as fundraising for Children in Need, we also spent some P4C (philosophy for children) time discussing gratitude and sharing what we are thankful for. The children shared some fantastic questions, discussed their ideas respectfully and talked about the rights that all children have such as the right to food, clothing and a safe home (article 27).
Autumn 2...
Farmers' Market
For enterprise week, we researched what we could make using the natural materials we had collected. We decided to make dream catchers so we bought some other materials such as wool and felt, using our £25 budget. During the week, we evaluated some existing dream catchers and then designed and made our own! We also practised some sewing skills such as the running stitch and the catch stitch and then learnt a new stitch called the whip stitch. Here are some photographs of us in action and our finished products which we were really proud of! Thank you to everyone who came to buy our dream catchers. Banyan class raised £94 for our two chosen charities - Oxfam and The Sheffield Cathedral Archer Project.
PE
In PE this half term we have been learning how to lose using a range of different team games. These games have included: a rock paper scissors challenge, 'To bank or not to bank' and a river crossing challenge. We have also worked on our fundamental skills like our balance and coordination as well as having lots of fun!
Discover term - Knowledge Organiser - Part 2
Here is our 2nd knowledge organiser for our 'Discover' term. Our question is 'How did people from the past shape the world we know today?' We will use the knowledge organiser to help us learn some key facts linked to our history learning. Why don't you try and learn them at home too? You could have a family quiz to see how much you can remember!
