Through Inspired Learning We Achieve Our Dreams

Palm Class

Miss Kirton and Miss Farmer

Welcome to Year 2 Palm! This page will give you an insight into the exciting learning that happens in our class.

How does a plant begin?

We looked at butter beans in our Science lesson this week. We learned that these seeds grow into plants and we looked closely to find out what was inside them! We learned that the seed contains nutrients that the plant will use to start growing - we could even see the start of a new plant developing inside!

Ball Skills ...

We will be developing our co-ordination skills using balls this half term. Take a look at some of the challenges we have been trying - maybe you could have a go at some at home too!

Christmas Dinner

We had a lovely dinner on Wednesday with party hats and crackers! Thank you Mr Turner and all of the lunchtime staff - it was delicious!

Merry Christmas everyone!

How did it all begin?

What used to be here? How has Sheffield changed? What were the steelworks like and how did they change over time?

We've been busy answering lots of historical questions this half term. Have a look at our video to see some of the things we found out.

Christmas with the Aliens ...

What a busy week we have had! The children have now finished all of their performances and they were fantastic. Thank you to everyone who helped with costumes, props and learning lines and particularly to the children for all of their hard work and patience.

Well done, everyone!

World Philosophy Day

We read the story "The Journey" by Francesca Sanna to celebrate World Philosophy Day. It reminded us of journeys that we have been on before and how we can sometimes feel nervous or frightened when we are visiting somewhere new. Lots of us remembered that our friends or families made us feel much happier when we were nervous and they can help us to feel safe too.

Our visit to Kelham Island Museum

We had a wonderful trip to the museum last week. The children had the opportunity to explore the steelworks and imagine what it might have been like to work there in the past. We found some enormous machines around the museum that were used for making steel such as the Bessemer Converter. We even dressed up as steelworkers and had a go at lifting the crucible pots using specials tongs. One of our favourite activities was listening to a special story all about a girl called Ironie. It taught us all about different metals and how Harry Brearley discovered stainless steel!

We've had great fun having a go at our daily mile! Our aim is to compete against ourselves and see how many laps of the yard we can complete in ten minutes. Hopefully, we will get better and better!

History  Detectives!

Today, we were history detectives. We started by looking at an old photograph from Sheffield. We noticed some large buildings next to the River Don which we thought might have been factories. We learned that Hadfield's Steelworks was once stood where we can now go shopping at Meadowhall!

Languages Day

We had great fun learning all about Wales and the Welsh language today. We discovered where Wales is and some of the things that it is well known for such as Mount Snowdon and St David's day. We also learned some Welsh phrases and words. We particularly enjoyed learning to count to ten in Welsh. You can watch the song that we learned using this link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/lingo-show-welsh-counting-song

What is a living thing?

We used pictures of insects during our nature walk to think carefully about how we know that something is alive. Then, we used the pictures to create our own models of the insects we saw and made lots of comparisons. We noticed that the living insects could move on their own, they could eat and breathe!

Dojo Points and Class Marbles

We collect dojo points for our individual achievements in Palm Class and these are linked to our whole school learning behaviours: being collaborative, caring, communicative, critical and creative.

We also collect marbles for whole class achievements. This half term our class target is to listen carefully to others' ideas and to show that we are ready for learning. Our aim is to collect thirty marbles by the end of this half term in order to earn our reward - baking!
