Oak Class

Mrs Fenton and Mrs O'Connor

Welcome to Year 2 Oak! This page will give you an insight into the exciting learning that happens in our class.

Spring Term 1

We hope you have had a fabulous Christmas and New Year break!  We are raring to go this Spring term and have lots of super learning planned for the coming weeks!  Have a look at our exciting plans below . . .

Historians!

We had a special delivery to Year 2 this week.  The museum has sent us a box of artefacts to explore and take care of!  We are enjoying using these to discover information about working life in the Sheffield steelworks and how it has changed over the last 170 years.

Our visit to Kelham Island Museum

We had a fabulous trip to Kelham Island Museum last week. The children had the opportunity to explore the steelworks and imagine what it might have been like to work there in the past. We found some enormous machines around the museum that were used for making steel such as the Bessemer Converter. We even dressed up as steelworkers and had a go at lifting the crucible pots using special tongs. One of our favourite activities was listening to a special story all about a girl called Ironie. It taught us all about different metals and how Harry Brearley discovered stainless steel!

Autumn 2

We have lots of exciting learning planned for this half term, including our trip to Kelham Island!  Have a look at our plans for Autumn 2. . .

Farmers' Market

The last week of term was Enterprise Week and in Y2 Oak we created our own company and made our very own product to sell.  We made Christmas decorations!  We used our Design and Technology skills to research existing products and then practise the running stitch.  We also learned lots of enterprise skills including creating our company name and logo, thinking about cost and profit, marketing our product and evaluating what went well or what could be improved next time.  Have a look at some of the photos of our busy and exciting Enterprise Week.

 European Day of Languages 

 We are learning French! 

26th September 2019 was the European Day of Languages and in Y2 Oak we learned about France.  We sang a French greetings song and learned how to say "Hello", "What is your name?", "My name is. . . ", "How are you?", and "Goodbye" in French.  We had lots of fun practising our conversation in French!  We found out that there are 7 continents and 5 oceans in the world and discovered that both France and the UK are in Europe.  We located them on a map and learned that the sea between our two countries is called the English Channel.  We then learned about some of the physical and human geographical features of France, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Alps and the Arc de Triomphe.  Finally, in our P4C session we learned that the three colours on the Tricolore flag represent the French motto - Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.  We linked these to our rights as children and our own values - Indepedence, Equality and Togetherness and thought about how we could show these values in school or at home.  We created the French flag with some of our ideas.  Have a look at the gallery to see all the fun we had!

How did it all begin?

Our topic this term is 'Discover' and we will focus our historical enquiry upon answering the question 'How did it all begin?'

We will compare our lives today to that of our parents' and grandparents' lives and use a range of sources to identify how Mosborough and Sheffield have changed over time.  As historians we will look at changes to technology, transport and homes and consider why those changes have occurred.  Furthermore, we will investigate the life of Thomas Boulsover and find out how his discovery of Sheffield plate impacted on the silver trade in Sheffield.

Below, you will find our knowledge organiser with some key information for the children to learn and share at home.

Autumn 1

We are excited to be back in the classroom after the summer holidays and we are raring to go!

Our Class Charter

On our transition day back in July we discussed our rights as pupils of Mosborough and from this we agreed and created our class rules.

We have all now signed our class charter and we think that these rules will ensure all our children's rights will be respected in our classroom and our

school.

Welcome to Y2 Oak!

We are really looking forward to our year in Y2 Oak.  We have lots of exciting things planned for the year ahead and can't wait to get started!

In our classroom we love to reward the children for their positive behaviour, trying their best, showing resilience and super learning.

Children can earn:

class dojos and house points for their individual efforts

table points for team effort - every Friday this decides our table of the week and each child on the winning table wins a prize from the prize box

class pom poms for whole class efforts - we have a target of 10 pom poms over the half term which earns us a special reward on the last day of term.

We are looking forward to giving out lots of these rewards during Autumn 1!
