Spring 2 overview

Maths

Our learning in maths is all about subtraction.

Here we are, showing how independent we are at exploring subtraction equations:

Our Bear Adventures

Jennifer Bear wants to learn from us. We are excellent geographers! She wants to explore Mosborough and the surrounding areas with the children of Y1 Beech. So far, she has had an excellent time and it is clear to see she is learning a lot about our local area.

What does it mean to belong?

The excellent home learning of Y1 Beech is forming a great display and a tool for discussion in our topic learning. We have been thinking about our enquiry question and how our home is the place we 'belong' and how it makes us feel. We have then been using our geography skills to explore the village of Mosborough and our location within the local area.

Spring 1:

What does it mean to belong?

Below you can see our topic overview for the coming half term. This shows you the learning we are doing in year 1 beech. Also attached is our knowledge organiser. Please remember to use this at home to learn key words and new vocabulary.

Party Fun!

The children had lots of fun at the Christmas party this year. We had a visit from someone very special which was very exciting. We asked questions, sang him a song and were each given a gift. Thank you Santa and Mrs Claus!

Thank you to the MPG for providing us with delicious food and treats. We also had fun playing games, dancing and dressing up in our best party outfits.

What a wonderful way to end the Autumn term!!!

'Christmas with the Aliens'

We are sure you will agree that the children in KS1 put on an excellent performance. They all worked incredibly hard to learn new songs, dances, follow stage directions and showed us just how well they work together. A huge well done!!

Here are some photographs of the children in Beech class. As you can see, they thoroughly enjoyed being part of the show!

Home Learning

Here is our home learning that we shared on Instagram. The children explain one strategy we are using to practise counting in tens and ones.

Maths

In maths we are continuing to develop our confidence in partitioning and representing two-digit numbers. We enjoy choosing numbers to work with and sharing our learning. We are getting very confident as mathematicians at explaining our thinking and number knowledge.

Our trip to Kelham Island Museum to help us remember the past!

We had a superb day at Kelham Island Museum where we looked at artefacts and took part in a range of activities to help us to remember the past. We gained lots of information about being a child during the war, what it would have been like to be an evacuee and got a sneak peak at life in the past. Before going to the museum we predicted what we thought artefacts were and spent time during our visit discovering whether we were right or not. Take a look our photographs, they show what a wonderful day of learning we had.

How do we remember what it was like to be an evacuee during the war?

Throughout our topic we have used a variety of sources to 'help us remember the past'. After thinking of and asking our own questions, we worked together to think, discuss, share ideas and explore the sources to gain information. It has been wonderful to see children displaying their skills as historians to investigate each source they were given.

Autumn 2: How do we remember the past?

Please see our autumn 2 updated topic overview.

History

As historians, we have used a variety of sources to learn about the war. Below, we are looking at images and items to explore rationing. With our knowledge we then compared food available now to the food available in the past.

History

One afternoon we received a message to say our help was needed. An item had been seen in school that the year 1's would need to investigate. All together we search around the school. Eventually, we found a box. This box was a time capsule. Inside it were items that will help us to answer our topic question 'How do we remember the past?'

It's beginning to look a lot like . . .

AUTUMN!

Our science learning this half term has focussed on the seasons. We have explored what autumn smells, feels and looks like. We enjoyed exploring the school grounds for examples of autumn.

Autumn 1: How do we remember the past?

Please see our autumn 1 overview and knowledge organiser. These show what we will be learning about over the coming weeks.
